Maria Goes to Bed

Stairs
to the stars,
each night a venture
trading on the quiet masquerade
of distant light.
Not fire but eyes.
Not dark but hidden faces.
At the window,
fates settled on her cheeks,
Sagittarius, Aquarius,
a glittering menagerie
of bears and lions.
“Take me,” she whispered,
but only her dreams did.
