The Lesser Dog

by Ka Vang

Snap, tear, yap and yip
Guarding the virtues of
The bathing huntress
And her moonlit stream

Your big brother's
Eyes glitter bright
Serious and stern
As he takes his snarling lead.

Tonight Orion's calling,
Tightening his dark belt
Heavy with the musk
Of his trophies,
His beard rank with
Blood and mead.

Your ears prick up
And though they think you
But a pup, within

The heart of tiny Anubis hides
Champing at his bit
To veer the dying
To the hidden streams
Of the world

Beyond the sight of men
Who can no longer dream.
