Volans/Flying Fish

by Nancy Ellis Taylor

I am trying
too hard to
understand

I would have
named it
Chicken Foot
   it is
more like
poultry parts
in the Chinese
corner market

I would have
named it
Penguin Toes
   it is
more like
flippery feet
on Southern
ice floes

Flying fish
are tourist
attractions
between L.A.
and Catalina

I am trying
too hard to
understand

I am trying
to read a
vanished script
I am trying

In a boat
in the center
of the ocean
city light free

I turn around
and around
close my eyes
then open them
and wait to see

And all I see
is
stars
