A Litany for Lavoisier

by Peg Duthie

Though the blade of the guillotine silence the match
it cannot douse the fire.
Though the blister of indifference spoil the lens
it cannot snuff out the searching.
Though the blaze of the zealot scorch the textbooks
it cannot extinguish the theorems.
Though the bluster of ignorance stifle laboratories
they cannot shatter the proofs.
Though a blur of poisons smother the skies
it cannot erase the existence of light.
